21st Century is called the Century of Stress. Anxiety and stress related problems are so common today, that between 7-10% of all adult population suffer from it at one or another time of life.

Anxiety is a complex combination of emotions including fear, worry, sadness, and It is often accompanied by physical sensations such as sweating, nausea, chest pain and/or shortness of breath.

Anxiety becomes a problem when it starts interfering with a person’s ability to work. Severe anxiety usually lasts more than six months, though it may not be a problem every day. Anxiety is often confused with Depression, which is a feeling of hopelessness.

The available treatments are limited. The most prescribed drugs are Benzodiazpines (Ativan, Centrax etc.), Betablockers (Indernal, Tenormin etc.), SRIs (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), Tricyclic Antidepressants etc.

All of these drugs help to some extent, but not without their side effects. For eg. BenzoDiazpines cause excessive drowsiness, interfering with normal working and are potentially habit forming. side-effects from other may include Nervousness, Blur vision, Low Blood Pressure, Sexual Impotence etc. Therefore, Drugs are not long-term solutions.

  • Kava is a commonly recommended herb for treatment of Anxiety. Kava extract is taken in 100 mg doses 2-3 times a day. However, it may not be suitable for people with liver problems.

  2. I have found that Yoga and heavy walking for 30 mins a day helps… its not a cure but it helps…
