Anxiety is a complex combination of emotions including fear, worry, sadness, and It is often accompanied by physical sensations such as sweating, nausea, chest pain and/or shortness of breath. It is a common emotion which has a very important function in relation to survival. But Anxiety in overdose and for long time, can lead to complicated mental and physical conditions. Anxiety becomes a problem when it starts interfering with a person’s ability to work. Severe anxiety usually lasts more than six months, though it may not be a problem every day. Anxiety is often confused with Depression, which is a feeling of hopelessness.
Symptoms of Anxiety
Physical weekness, fatigue, sleeplessness, indigestion problems or constipation, palpatation sweating, high heart beat rate, shallow and rapid breathing.
The person may also show lack of concentration and efficiency in daily jobs, and irritability in general.
Herbs and Natural Remedies for Anxiety
- Kava is a commonly recommended herb for treatment of Anxiety. Kava extract is taken in 100 mg doses 2-3 times a day. However, it may not be suitable for people with liver problems.
- A combination of popular nerve tonics Valeriana (Valeriana officinalis) and Passion flower(Passiflora incarnata) is traditionally used for treatment of Anxiety.
- Indian herbs like Brahmi(Bacopa monnieri), and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) are traditionally recommended alone or in combinations with other herbs to curb Anxiety and increase mind’s stress thresholds.
- Soaking yourself in hot water with magnesium salts (epsom salts) helps in treatment of anxiety.
- Supplements with multi-vitamin and minerals taken over a period of 3-4 weeks have shown to reduce Anxiety.
- Meditation for atleast 15 mins a day can be a great help in reducing anxiety.
