Cholesterol is a fatty substance which forms a vital component of our body, used for several vital activities like formation of cell membranes, synthesis of essential hormones.

Cholesterol can be both good and bad, so it’s important to learn what cholesterol is, how it affects your health and how to manage your blood cholesterol levels.

If Cholesterol increases in a body there is increase in risk of Heart Attack or Stroke.

High Cholestrol symptoms don’t show up till quite late. Today’s lifestyle and diet has created a fairly large number of high cholesterol cases. With an estimate approx 20% of american adults suffer from high Cholesterol.

The Bad Thing is People only know about high cholesterol when they have heart problems like angina, or even a stroke.

The best form of treatment is prevention. A few herbs described in a section below can be taken as a part of regular diet to avoid getting high cholesterol levels. You must also get your cholesterol checked every two years or so, even if you dont have any symptoms. Prevention is Better than Cure.

Are you at risk for High Cholesterol?

You are in a High risk zone if your total cholesterol level is 240 or more. You have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. If you are in this zone you should have your LDL and HDL cholesterol tested, and start on the treatment or preventive measures as soon as possible.

You are on border of high risk if your Cholestrol is varies between 200 to 239 mg/dL. Beyond 200 mg/dL the risk factor increases rapidly for coronary heart diseases.

Moreover, Women in Post Menopausal stage have twice as high risk than others for heart related diseases.

Some common Home Remedies for reducing Cholesterol

  • Guggul, also known as Guggulipid, is a standardized extract from the Commiphora mukul tree, which is native to India. Research has shown that by increasing the breakdown of LDL cholesterol in the liver, it can lower LDL cholesterol levels by 25-35%. Guggulipid can also lower total cholesterol by 14-27%, triglycerides by 22-30%, and increase HDL cholesterol by approximately 20%.
  • Intake of half teaspoon of Psyllum husk(Ishabgul) herb with milk at bedtime helps in control the level of cholesterol.
  • Take the diet in excess quantity of fibres are present which will give relief from hogh blood cholesterol.
  • Yogasanas like ardhamatsyaendrasana, shalabhansan, padmasana and vajrasana will give relief after few days.
  • Take 2-5gm of sunflower seeds with water also reduce the level of high blood cholesterol. Ginger reduces the level of cholesterol.
  • Terminalia arjuna (Arjun) The bark of arjun tree is useful as an anti-ischemic and cardioprotective agent in hypertension and ischemic heart diseases. It reduces the level of triglycerides and cholesterol and has been reported to enhance the synthesis of LDL-apoprotein (apoB); inhibits the oxidation of LDL and accelerates the turnover of LDL-cholesterol in liver. This enhances the elimination of cholesterol from the body.Arjun is usually available as a single herb or in combination with other herbs like Guggul and Amla for better effect.
