Erectile Dysfunction is characterized by the incapability of the male to maintain an erection. Normal erections during sleep and in the early morning suggest a psychogenic cause whereas a loss of erection signals an underlying disease often cardiovascular in origin. There are other factors that lead to ED which maybe diabetes or hypogonadism; decrease in testosterone levels due to the disease affecting the testicles or the pituitary gland. A better and simple way to isolate between physiological and psychological impotence is to check if the patient ever had an erection. If it is more then it is likely to be psychological while less means physiological.

A few causes of impotence may be medically caused. Some medications that are used to control high blood pressure and also those that modify the central nervous system response may affect erection by lowering the blood supply or altering the nerve activity. Antidepressants can cause Erectile Dysfunction as a side effect. The Surgical procedures for a number of other conditions may remove the anatomical structures necessary for erection, damage nerves or affect blood supply. There have been inconclusive studies to suggest that risk of Erectile Dysfunction is high as a result of male circumcision. Excessive alcohol consumption also has long been recognized as a cause of Erectile Dysfunction.

A study in the recent past found that the Erectile Dysfunction to also be associated with bicycling. The number of hours on a bike put pressure on the penis from the saddle of an upright bicycle. These are a few of the causes that can be attributed to Erectile Dysfunction. However there is no need to despair about this condition. It roughly affects about 15-20 million Americans in the age group of 40-50. There is help at hand but however it can be done only if you acknowledge the problem and discuss it with your general medical practitioner so that he can prescribe the right course of medication for you.

There are remedies for ED both allopathic as well as herbal. The choice of treatment also depends on the patient as some of the times the problem with ED is entirely psychological. The treatments available in allopathy are many but remember that they are all prone to side effects and they need to be discussed thoroughly with the medical practitioner. There shouldn’t have been any medication for the heart or nervous system as these may interfere with the medicine prescribed for the Erectile Dysfunction.

There are natural Remedies for ED as well which can be recommended for a treatment without much side-effect. L-arginine is an amino acid that is abundant in meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. The body uses arginine to make nitric oxide, which aids in relaxing the blood vessels. It should however be taken only in moderation as high intake will be responsible for increase in stomach acid and consequently ulcer. Another one of the potential Natural Remedies for ED; Ashwagandha or “Indian Ginseng” is a tonic herb believed to be capable of strengthening the body and more traditionally used to increase the sexual capacity as an aphrodisiac.

Then there is an herb damiana, used traditionally in Mexico as a male aphrodisiac. It has a mild effect. Siberian ginseng is believed to be an aphrodisiac which affects the system of the body that is in need of support. It is considered one of the superior Remedies for ED.

Traditionally Chinese practitioners used lyceum berries and lotus seeds for Erectile Dysfunction to enhance kidney and liver energy.

Saw palmetto is used to treat Erectile Dysfunction, especially when mixed with other herbs. It basically reduces the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.

The bark from a yohimbe tree found in West Africa is a traditional aphrodisiac and also forms the source of yohimbine, a prescription drug for Erectile Dysfunction. It increases the libido as well as decreases the period between ejaculations. This is not recommended because of the dosage range. Too much of this dose and it is toxic and too low a dose, the herb will not work. They should hence be taken with caution.
