Menorrhagia or Hypermenorrhea is the medical term for excessive bleeding at the time of the menstrual period. Menorrhagia or Hypermenorrhea is the condition which can result in excessive bleeding either in number of days or amount of blood or both. Almost every woman at some time in her reproductive life experiences heavy bleeding during her menstrual period. Some women have heavy periods almost every cycle.

The condition should be diagnosed by a doctor to rule out a variety of potentially serious underlying conditions such as cancer and uterine fibroids, abnormal position of the uterus and inflammation (swelling) of the fallopian tubes.

What are the symptoms and signs of Menorrhagia?

  • Menorrhagia may be accompanied by Anemia and fatigue. This condition can also lead to iron deficiency due to blood loss and hence aggravating the condition.
  • Irregular menstrual periods lasting as long as 7 days
  • Constant pain in your uterus or lower abdomen area during menstrual period
  • Heavy menstrual flow that includes large blood clots
  • You may need to change sanitary protection during the night or may need to use double sanitary protection to control your menstrual flow

How is Menorrhagia generally treated?

Generally, Menorrhagia is treated using Hormone Therapy or Delaying Menstrual Periods using Birth Control Pills. Oral contraceptives can help regulate ovulation and reduce episodes of excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding.

The hormone progesterone is generally considered the main cause of excessive bleeding and can help correct hormonal imbalance and reduce menorrhagia.

If the condition is accompanied by anemia, iron supplements are recommended regularly. Its good to start on iron supplements if your iron levels are low but you’re not yet anemic, as the conditions may worsen with time.

Generally, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) to help reduce cramping and blood flow. These drugs act as temporary Prostaglandin inhibitors, and hence may help in reducing the blood flow.
