Water Pollution and Your Health

Most people don’t understand what having fresh water means to their health. Pollution in our water sources has put harmful chemicals in our bodies that are causing disease at a rampant rate.

Pesticides used in farmlands are absorbed into the ground and are then consumed by the plants along with the water they need to grow. The chemicals become part of the plant and whatever the plant produces. When you look at the vast amounts of vegetables and fruits in a superstore, you should begin to wonder how many chemicals these fresh items actually contain.

Toxins in our environment are linked to Cancer, auto-immune disease such as Fibromyalgia, weakened immunity, infertility, birth defects, neurological disease, pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and more. Toxins are also linked to an explosion of IBS, constipation, and diarrhea.

Nearly half of all Americans and 3/4ths of people who live in cities get their water from underground sources. Underground water picks up whatever they pass through. Rainwater and melted snow run off of parking lots, rooftops, streets, and farms, and carry with them many deadly substances they’ve picked up along the way. During a storm pollutants are washed into rivers and streams. Once they get into the water cycle, they are very hard to eliminate.

According to recent reports, another type of toxin has been found in drinking water. Add over-the-counter drugs and pharmaceutical drugs to the list of toxins found in drinking water. If you think that they are entering our water supplies because people are flushing their medicines down the toilet you would be wrong. People take pills. Their bodies absorb some of the medication, but the rest of it passes through and is flushed down the toilet. After treatment, these water supplies make their way back to our homes. Water treatment plants do not have a way to remove these drugs as of yet.

Finding fresh water is getting harder if you consider that 99.5% of all fresh water is found in icecaps and glaciers. On a large scale, each year, 40 million acres of tropical rainforests, an area larger than California, are destroyed through logging or burning. On a small scale, if you flush your toilet only 6 times a day, you can use up to 15,300 gallons a year just for flushing the toilet! If you have a typical four-member family, and each member of your household uses about 80 gallons of water a day, that’s 29, 200 gallons a year per person. There are approximately 303,824,646 people living in the US. When you do the math, you visualize the vast amounts of waste thats depleting fresh water supplies.

American’s have moved away from caring about the environment as much. When I was a little girl, there were commercials on TV that reminded us not to pollute! If every person did their part to keep America green and use less water, we wouldn’t have to worry as much about our fresh water supplies. Environmental studies conclude that we need to conserve and remember not to pollute our water supplies now. It is healthier for our planet and healthier for us!
