Sparing a few blessed ones, most women experience many health problems during menstruation, the most common being menstruation pains, abdominal cramps, back ache, headache, depression, emotional turmoil and mood swings. Medically this is known as PMS or Pre-Menstrual Syndrome.
Approximately around 60 million women suffer from the symptoms of Pre menstrual Syndrome in varying degrees of discomfort and distress. Out of these most common and the most disturbing is the menstrual migraine. Amongst the 160 documented Pre Menstrual Syndromes studies, this is the most commonly reported.
The medical fraternity has not yet been able to find the exact cause behind the extreme levels of pain and other symptoms in some women, but they suspect that genetic make up and the hormone levels to be the major contributing factor.
Research suggests that most of the symptons occur due to the female hormone Estrogen. Estrogen is the female sex hormone specifically regulates the menstrual cycle fluctuations throughout the cycle. Change in levels of this hormone and its deficiency leads to the disturbances like headache, pain and cramps in women. When the levels of estrogen and progesterone change, women will be more vulnerable to headaches. Sometimes women also use oral contraceptives which are also known to effect the hormone levels. Because oral contraceptives influence estrogen levels, women on birth control pills may experience more menstrual migraines. These women also reported Abdominal Cramping, Anxiety, Breast tenderness, Irritability, Weight Gain, throbbing headache accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to bright lights and sounds. An aura may precede the menstrual migraine.
Symptoms related to PMS are emotional as well as physical vary from woman. The rigorousness of the symptoms may show a discrepancy each month for every woman, there may even be months when there are no noticeable PMS symptoms, while some months can be toiling.
